Craig Strickland from Alma started a band, and that’s where it all began. Sherwood native Helen Wisner had some friends in the band and their paths soon crossed. At that time, however, Helen was seeing someone else. But Craig got his chance soon enough, and the two fell madly in love.
A year later, at the Miss Arkansas USA pageant in which Helen was competing, their relationship took a pivotal turn. Craig had a hunch she would win, and he was right. When she was announced the winner, amidst tears and pageant waves, Craig shocked the crowd (and Helen!) by walking on stage and getting on one knee. Talk about a crowning moment!
The Inspiration
Both leaders at Cross Church in Fayetteville, Helen and Craig based their wedding around the “light” that Christians are called to be to the world, especially in marriage. From readings to muted lighting to deep jewel tones, everything was constructed to capture a feeling of reverence, intimacy and elegance.
How They Customized
A couple after our own hearts, the Stricklands forwent the groom’s cake for something colder, getting Shake’s Frozen Custard to cater the reception, which added a nice contrast to the hot chocolate station. They also made the day their own with live music arranged by members of Craig’s band, Backroad Anthem.
Traditions & Trends
Also notable was the couple’s decision to go without a few common items. Not wanting the added stress or expense, they decided not to give out favors to the guests and found no one really missed getting them. Plus, they decided to stick to the tradition of not seeing each other before the ceremony and scheduled their photos, including Helen’s bridals, for the following day before they left for their honeymoon.
