You’ve already asked your girls to be your bridesmaids. Now you’re starting to think about the dresses, and the girls are curious, too: they want to make sure they like what you pick. One way to please everyone is to let each girl express her individuality by letting each one pick her own dress. But before you let go of creative control, check out this guide to doing it right. (PS: Check out our favorite gown vendors here.)

Be Clear

Be honest with your girls; tell them what you want your wedding to look like. Tell them if you don’t think their dress works with yours. Help them pick out what’s best for your celebration.

Be Considerate

Not everyone can afford to spend hundreds of dollars on a dress. One of the advantages of having your bridesmaids be mismatched is that they won’t have to, so don’t force them into it. Be kind when giving your opinion on their dresses and tell them exactly why something works or doesn’t work.

Be Consistent

As far as style goes, if you’re letting your girls wear lots of different colors, keep the cuts of the dresses similar so that you maintain a sense of unity. Everything doesn’t have to match, but all the dresses should create a consistent look that goes along with you and your ceremony.

Be Colorful

There’s no harm in having your ‘maids wear lots of bright colors! But do keep them in the same color family. If you’re not matching the colors, keep them compatible.

Don’t Clash

Have another set of eyes you trust help you look over the colors and make sure they work together. See the dresses in person with your dress and some of your decor to make sure no colors are competing with each other.
