There’s a scene in the 1980’s cult classic movie "Troop Beverly Hills" when posh housewife-turned-troop leader Phyllis Nefler (Shelly Long) throws the rulebook out the window and leads her daughter’s scout troop on a quest to earn their own customized patches, one of them for diamond appreciation.

Phyllis sits at the jeweler’s counter, her girls surrounding her, as she explains to them the Four C’s of diamonds: cut, color, clarity and carat.

She wiggles her fingers and lifts a gigantic ring to her ear. ”And it's a canary diamond, you say? Does it sing?” she croons. “Yes, yes it does. Kumbaya, my lord. Kumbaya…”

If you’re like most girls, stepping into the world of engagement rings can be overwhelming. All the lingo and shapes and settings are enough to make your head swim.

This week we’ll break down a different component of the Four C’s each day and hopefully help things seem a little less daunting. Make sure you check back with us for the latest tutorial.

So breathe deeply, make some s’mores and take Phyllis’ hand. She’ll have you singing “Kumbaya” by Friday.
