Sela Barrow & Thad “Trey” Byron Hanna III

Sometimes two people just click. For El Dorado native Sela Barrow and Fayetteville native Trey Hanna, it was as simple as that. Sela and Trey met while attending the University of Arkansas. Trey got her number right before Christmas break in 2014, and the two chatted up a storm for hours on the phone getting to know each other. When they got back to school, Sela and Trey were inseparable. That summer, Sela left for Rome to study abroad. At the end of the term, Trey flew to meet her in Europe where they backpacked together for a month. “I knew it was true love when we were enjoying each other’s company having a picnic on the lawn in front of the Eiffel Tower,” Trey says.
He proposed two years later while on vacation in Charleston. Trey planned the entire thing in secret — only the jeweler knew he had bought the ring. The romantic proposal took place under the 500-year-old Angel Oak Tree and completely took Sela by surprise. Exactly one year later, the two said “I do.”
The intimate affair of 75 guests felt elegant and formal with a classic color palette of ivory, cream, blush and champagne. Sela decided on an Old World Baroque theme. She pulled inspiration from European fashion, her travels abroad, 18th-century art, Grace Kelly, Versailles and her grandmother’s home.
“I have always been fascinated with antiques and how they age so beautifully,” Sela says. “I wanted my wedding to feel timeless, formal, nostalgic, and to feel as if you stepped back in time.”
As for the venue, the couple chose Bo Adams Estate for the European feel. Because they backpacked Europe together touring gorgeous palaces and extensive gardens, they couldn’t believe their luck in finding a place like that right here in Arkansas.
How They Customized
Music to Our Ears
“The Princess Diaries Waltz” by John Debney
“I Love You for Sentimental Reasons” by Linda Ronstadt
“At Last” by Etta James
Sela wanted guests to feel like they were attending a French garden party. Even down to the most minute detail, she paid homage to the European theme. During the ceremony and cocktail, she hired a harpist to play classical music. The harp itself was from Italy and over 100 years old. During the cocktail hour held in the maze garden, Sela served a very French spread of grapes, baguettes, different cheeses and lots of wine.
With twinkling bistro lights, candles everywhere and a swing band playing throughout the night, the couple created a fairytale-like reception. Sela also included items that had personal meaning, like the antique love seat that was Trey’s grandmother’s.
The couple prepped for their first dance as Mr. and Mrs. by taking ballroom dancing lessons in Fayetteville. Between the swing music and the venue itself, guests later told Sela that the black-tie soiree reminded them of “The Great Gatsby.”
“I will remember the music and dancing, and how everything I planned came together,” Sela says. “I also will never forget how Trey looked at me when I walked down the aisle.”
