The marriage of Little Rock locals Laura Bryan and Russ Curtner had been a long time coming. It began in second grade when their parents took turns carpooling the kids back and forth to school. The carpool buddies attended the same high school and remained close friends, even when Russ went to Ole Miss and Laura to Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. They always made plans to catch up during holiday breaks, but it was shortly after one fateful visit from Laura to Ole Miss that the two started dating, and the rest was history. Four years later, Russ proposed on the night of Laura’s birthday festivities, and everyone celebrated a love 20 years in the making.
The Inspiration
In the fashion of true Beverly Hills glam, the Curtner wedding took on the vibe of a mid-century supper club in a swank, tropical setting. Life-size banana trees, orchids, dahlias and island foliage dotted each surface; glimmers of silver, emerald and zebra-striped linens filled the space; and a custom cabana over the dance floor solidified the notion that guests were not in Arkansas anymore.
How They Customized
It was important to Laura to really utilize the reception venue, so she made sure the Dreamland Ballroom got the attention it deserved by calling on Memphis Soul Revue. The band ran with the mid-century inspiration, doing justice to the stage that once welcomed the likes of Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald.
The reception’s personal touches included custom cocktail cups, napkins and matchboxes, which added to the supper club atmosphere. They even had a custom promo code for guests to receive discounted rides from Über for the weekend.
