It's official brides: naked cakes are here to stay!

While the idea behind them is the same as your typical wedding cake, there are a few important details that make it pretty different from a cake that’s frosted. The Knot's blog highlights a few things to know before taking the naked cake plunge.

Here we go:

  • Stick with natural elements for styling. Naked cakes tend to have a more natural feel, so those ornate sugar or gum paste flowers won’t exactly vibe well with the cake. A good alternative is fresh flowers, fruit or edible garnishes!
  • Choose flavors and fillings carefully. Unlike with a traditional frosted cake, the flavors and fillings that you choose are going to determine what your cake looks like. If you’re looking for a style that’s put together, you’ll want to stick with flavors in a similar color palette, which is something you don’t have to think about with a buttercream or fondant cake.
  • Think naked cakes aren't sweet? Think again. Patti Stobaugh, owner of pattiCakes Bakery in Conway, said many brides ask about them because they don't like icing and think they aren't too sweet. Because there isn't any icing on the cake to keep it moist, naked cakes tend to dry out faster and therefore have to be kept moist through other means. "You have to brush these cakes with quite a bit of simple syrup to keep the cake moist," she said. "That increases the sweetness."
  • Smooth lines make the cake. If you're planning on making a naked cake yourself, remember clean smooth edges are what sets a great naked cake apart from the rest. The outside edge of the cake is going to be darker than the rest of the layer, so trimming off the edge should bring out the color of the cake and make it look cleaner.
