Our first anniversary was on June 1, 2013. I was killing time between doctor's appointments in Little Rock by casually browsing the engagement ring section in a certain store associated with rustic living. I knew Lake's tastes fairly well because she was pretty explicit in that she didn't like over-the-top engagement rings. Anyway, there it sat: her three-stone princess-cut engagement ring. Part one, complete.
I've known her father since I was in high school. He had covered several games in which I had played, and as an adult he has reported every sport I have coached. We had and still have an outstanding relationship. However, he was extremely hesitant about letting Lake go to just anyone. I tried for the better part of a month to procure his blessing, but he always changed the subject or came up with bogus excuses about how I could never find the right ring for her. Then one day, I told him 'I love your daughter more than anyone else ever will, I want to be with her forever. I'm going to ask her to marry me on her birthday.' He just replied, 'Do what you want, crazy boy. I can't say no.'
I'm horrible at keeping secrets. How I carried this thing around for a month I'll never know. I wanted the engagement to be special, in a place where she would feel comfortable and have very little static. I chose her birthday dinner because most of her grandparents and family would be there, along with my parents. I struggled to keep my cool through out the dinner, but once the dessert round was dispenced. I dropped on one knee and said 'Lake, you're the sweetest thing I've ever known. Will you be my wife?
She said yes.
